The rupee did not move sharply against the dollar on the money market on Wednesday in the process of trading activity, dealers said. The rupee picked up four paisas versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.88 and Rs 138.90 respectively, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee maintained overnight levels in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.50 and Rs 139.00 respectively, they said. The rupee slipped by Rs 1.70 against the euro for buying and selling at Rs 156.70 and Rs 158.50 respectively, they said.

In the third Asian trade, the dollar was capped against its peers on Wednesday on falling US yields and before the Federal Reserve's policy meeting minutes, though it managed to gain on the yen as stronger investor risk appetite curbed demand for the Japanese currency.

The US currency was up 0.2 percent at 110.83 yen.

The Japanese currency, which tends to serve as a safe-haven in times of risk aversion, gave up ground as Tokyo shares climbed to fresh two-month highs.

The dollar index versus a basket of six major currencies was a touch lower at 96.451 after shedding about 0.4 percent overnight.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.220, the greenback was 4.068 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.724 in relation to the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee witnessed divergent trend in relation to the greenback in the local currency market on Wednesday.

Following fluctuating demand and supply situation in the market, the greenback moved both ways and ended for buying and selling at Rs 138.60 and Rs 139.15 against the overnight closing trend Rs 138.50 and Rs 139.30 respectively, local currency dealers said.

Moreover, the local currency maintained declining trend for the second consecutive day against the pound sterling. Resultantly, the pound's buying and selling rates further rose from the Tuesday's closing of Rs 177.50 and Rs 179.00 to Rs 178.60 and Rs 180.40 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar gained 5paisa against the rupee at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Wednesday.

The dollar opened at Rs138.85 (buying) and Rs 138.95(selling) against last rate of Rs138.80 (buying) and Rs 138.90 (selling). It closed at Rs138.85 (buying) and Rs 138.95 (selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold was Rs. 68,150 (selling) and Rs 68,100 (buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
